Open access has led to a massive increase in publishing, resulting in greater sharing and availability of cutting-edge information. Funders are increasingly mandating that the results of any research they fund must be freely available online. On the other hand, access to the internet and the skills to use it are necessary.
Over recent years, open access refocused on vast services for academic libraries around the world with a significant proportion of research being produced by their academic and research community. Universities and other academic and research institutions have introduced open access policies to ensure that this research doesn't get locked away behind paywalls and that open access versions are made available through their repository.
